When Libby and I were looking to build our house, something we loved doing regularly was spending time visiting model homes. I remember one model home had a design that we really liked. A while later, we decided return and check out the house that had become a sort of inspiration to us. We pulled up in front of the house and quickly entered and began walking around the different rooms. The furnishings were different than before, but we gave that no thought. Everything was fine until we went into the dinning room where seated around the table was a nice family having their dinner together! It was no longer a model home it was their home. Talk about embarrassment! We darted out the door and hopped in the car, at which point we realized that the model home sign was no longer in the front yard.
That model home was an inspiration to us. We wanted to model our home after it. If you were going to start a business and you wanted it to be successful, would you go to your the guy who never got his business going, who always wants to borrow money, who has all kinds of advise for people, but never works to make a business grow? Of course not! In the same way, when seeking advice about making a family work, we need to know where to look. Let’s look at a man who, not only made his family work, but also his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren. A man who was not perfect but loved and served God. That man is Abraham.
Before God called him, he had no accomplishments or spiritual recognition. He was raised in a pagan worshiping family and did nothing to earned God's favor, yet God called him and he responded. We need to do the same thing. We must answer God’s call for our families.
Genesis 12:1 "Now the Lord said to Abram, 'Go forth from your country [culture], and from your relatives [family traditions] and from your father's house, to the land which I will show you."
God prospered him, blessed him, and protected him after he called him to live and walk in God's ways. Look at the reasons He did so...
Genesis 18:19 "For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him."
God’s plan was not just for Abraham but for the lineage that he would bring. The same is true for you and me. We are to answer God’s call in our lives, not just for us, but for the generations who will follow us. When we follow after God we are influencing our children and grandchildren who will follow us.
