Barbara Walters did a story on 20/20 about gender roles in Kabul several years ago before the Afghan conflict. She highlighted how women objected to the custom of having to walk about 5 paces behind their husbands.
She returned to Kabul recently and observed that women still walked behind their husbands, walked even further back, and appeared pleased with the custom. Ms. Walters approached one of the Afghan women and asked,
"Why do you now seem happy with this old custom that you tried so hard to change?"
"Land mines" answered the Afghan woman.
Whether those women are got smart or are just getting even is anyone's guess. But thinking right is important. We must think like the Lord thinks.
Ephes. 4:17-18 (NIV)
So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.
“I don’t really get it. I just don’t understand life” people say. “Things just do not make sense!” It is like driving in the middle of the desert on a moonless night and your lights go out in your car. You can not see. You think, “If I could just see where I was going, I would be alright.” That bible verse said “darkened in their understanding.”
People go from one bad relationship to another, one bad financial mistake to another, things are not working out, they may not admit it but things keep turning out wrong. Why? Without God and His thoughts people live “in the futility of their thinking.” It means emptiness of their thinking.. not stupid, but rather it means what should be in their life is not. It is empty. There are no thoughts of the life. No thought of God.
The life God wants for us does not come unless our thinking changes.
Isaac Newton is considered to be the most influential scientist who ever lived. His accomplishments in mathematics, optics, and physics laid the foundations for modern science and revolutionized the world. He was his consistent in his convictions about God and the bible.
“The true God is a living, intelligent and powerful Being. He governs all things, and knows all things that are or can be done.”
He also said,
“No sciences are better attested than the religion of the Bible.”
To live without God’s thought is foolish. He is the one who knows the end form the beginning. He is the one who knows how families need to be raised, how to have good marriages, how to plan you life so that you experience genuine success. He knows it all and is not stingy with the information! As we change our thinking to His, our lives change form futile to fulfilled; not being separated from God, but included in His life that Jesus said was “abundant.” Honestly, our culture is ignorant of what God could do for them.
People are like the woman Jesus spoke to at a water well. He had just asked her for a drink of water. She had had five more than significant others in her life, and the one she was with at the time Jesus spoke to her was not her husband. Not the kind of woman most church growth plans cater to. Look what He said to this immoral woman who was on her sixth guy:
John 4:10 (NIV)
Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water."
She just did not know what God could do for her. Her thought were not God thoughts and she was missing the life God had for her. We need to know what God has for us and allow our lives to be lived out according to His thoughts. Unless we know God’s thoughts, the bible, we settle for a sad and less than existence.
Choose His thoughts.
