The Heart of Christmas

Some friends were hanging out one day, and the conversation grimly turned to the issue of death. One of the friends asked the others, "What would you like people to say about you at your funeral?" One answered, "I would want people to say, 'He was a great humanitarian who cared about his community.'" A second replied, "I would want people to say, 'He was a great husband and father, an example for many to follow.'" The third friend gave it some thought and answered, "I would hope someone says, 'Look, he's moving!'"

There are rewards and blessings that come to the person who guards their heart. This time of year, our hearts are easily distracted from what really matters. Although Christmas is really about Christ and him coming to us, everything around us wants the message of Christmas to be about gifts and material things.

What we allow to go on in our hearts will lead us to a rewarded fruitful life or the reverse. The bible says it like this - Your life is about as good as your hearts condition… no better and no worse.

Proverbs 4:23 Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life.

3 John 1:2 Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.

When Immanuel came to earth 2,000 years ago, he came to teach us about the heart. He told a parable once about the how the condition of the heart affects the fruitfulness of the life.  He said that the Word of God was like a seed and that that seed would find its way into different types of ground (representing hearts in different conditions). Jesus described one heart that the Seed of Truth goes into, but the heart that has thorns in it, and that seed their cannot grow and bear fruit. Or it can go into a good heart and produce a crop.

Luke 8:14 "And the seed which fell among the thorns, these are the ones who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with worries and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to maturity..."

But see what happens when the Seed of the Gospel comes into a heart ready to hear it...

Luke 8:8;15 "And other seed fell into the good soil, and grew up, and produced a crop a hundred times as great...And the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance."

Can you see that? Your life is suppose to yield a crop of 100 times! Your life should be so packed with God’s blessing that it overflows.  Fruitfulness in your life is based on the condition of your heart.

This Christmas, when everyone and everything around is begging for your attention, keep your heart pure. Keep it honest. Keep it ready to believe and trust God.  Keep it faithfull. Full of faith and trust. Because the bible says that faith is an issue of the heart.

Romans 10:10 "...for with the heart man believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation."
